Keeping a Plant Alive Indoors
67How to Keep Plants Alive
Keeping a Plant Alive Indoors
For many, keeping a plant alive is not quite as easy as they
hoped it would be. Most assume it should be an extremely easy concept to
master. After all, when one looks outside, unless you live in the desert or
high mountains plants are everywhere. While keeping plants alive outdoors is a
task that requires forethought and technique, it is not as difficult as keeping
a plant alive indoors. If one can keep a plant alive indoors there should not
be much difficulty in keeping one alive outdoors.
How the seeds are treated early in the growing process is an extremely
important component to how well they fare as they mature. For the best results
one should start the seeds in a soil mixture that is specifically engineered
for seed growth. Follow the instructions that came with your seeds carefully,
any deviation from which can cause disease or weak plants. Follow these
instructions until the first sprouting, or germination of the seeds.
Once the seed has finally sprouted into a seedling the real fun begins.
Continue to be cautious at this point, because this phase of the plants
development is what determines how healthy the plant will be as it grows. Light
becomes an important factor to consider, as it will continue to be throughout
the life of the plant. Placing a fluorescent shop light directly above the
seedling is an easy way to provide it with the light it needs, as long as you
turn the light on and off in accordance with the plants recommended amount of
sun, which should have either come with the plant or could be found online. It
is important to not get overzealous with the light and to give the plant
darkness as well. The soil that the plant is in should still be light and
fluffy to promote healthy root growth. As long as you water the plant evenly
and according to its recommended daily water amounts, your plant should
continue to grow strong.
Once the plant has matured it must be moved into a pot that is large enough for
it to continue to grow. The important keys to the plants survival at this point
are to not subject it to extreme changes in light, temperature, or watering
times. Replacing the soil regularly in order to keep good nutrition going to
the roots is also a good habit. Soon you will have a plant that brings color
and life into an otherwise dull room.
