Why Support Writers and Booksellers by Refusing to Purchase Penny Books on Amazon?

Amazon has become one of the premiere websites to buy all sorts of books. Also very popular for book/literature shoppers is Alibris, Textbooks, Bookbyte, Google Shopping, Abe Books, Half Price Books.com and there are many other popular places to purchase books. Some of these books are extremely cheap with some actually only costing a penny, plus shipping. While you may think this is a great deal, it makes it hard for people to make a living selling books and it is counterintuitive behavior for anyone who wants to encourage the art of writing and the further development of literature in our nation. Even though the book selling business is ever-changing, it is still important to make sure that books retain their value. You may not realize it yet, but this responsibility actually falls in large part on you and the choices you make when buying books online. There is a way to help make this happen. While book sales are the fastest selling items on the Internet and approximately 600 million books are expected to be sold online in this year alone, there is a very small, simple way for you, the consumer public, the American people, the book buyers who still consider books to be an important form of media, of entertainment and art...people who still believe that learning and growth matters...to be a part of making sure that the book business remains strong and accessible to the public long-term.

When you are looking to buy a book on Amazon, you may find several books that you would be interested in reading. If one or a few of these are only a penny, you may decide to buy it because of the low price. However, you could also scroll down the page a bit, even flip to the next page or two if necessary, and choose to purchase a book that would cost you only a little extra when you order this book. It can be as little as a dollar more, but that one dollar, less than the cost of a cup of coffee, can go a long way to help bring the value of books back up and to help the stay at home moms in America attempting to contribute to the success of their family and their children. It can help to fund the college students working hard to improve themselves to make our nation a better and more advanced place to be filled with educated citizens. It can help encourage writers who are sometimes competing with the other booksellers online who are selling their used books while they themselves are sometimes selling their own books in new or used condition. It can help support the entire trade and encourage talented writers to keep working hard to entertain us all and enrich our lives with the proper use of their skill. It can also level the playing field a bit so that people will purchase both online and perhaps even choose to purchase books in brick and mortar stores that could never survive by selling penny books, but who wants a world without bookstores to visit and peruse?

People pour their hearts and souls into writing books and those books should be worth more than just a penny. If everyone was willing to pay a little more for books that entertain and inspire so many people, they can help authors and booksellers to better enjoy the opportunity to make a living by working from home, available to their children, available to properly care for their pets and available to fill in the daytime gaps as shoppers themselves who will be able to help retail stores, etc. during the day times where the 9-5 workers cannot go to help support these aspects of the economy, but for the night times and weekends.

As the book industry is in flux as it is now, consumers need to consider the fate of the writers who are trying to make a living by creating wonderful stories and the booksellers who are trying to share those wonderful stories with the world at affordable prices that help everyone to win! By adding a dollar or two to you next Amazon book order, Alibris book order, Barnes and Noble, Borders, Half Price Books, or any other online bookstore option you choose....you can help help change the face of this industry and the economy of our nation for the better.
