houston moving companies: moving breakables

Moving is a stressful time of life. Even if that stress is tempered with excitement or happiness, there is still a very real concern over how your possessions will fare in the trip. We spend our whole lives collecting things that help define and exhibit who we are as a person and the thought of someone coming in to transport it miles away can make anyone nervous. However, not everything is worrisome to move. Couches, mattresses, and things like that are resilient and are rarely an issue. It is the items like glassware, flat screen televisions, and collectible items that concern us the most. Thankfully there are a few things you can do to help reduce the chances of something getting broken.

The first thing you can do to protect your breakables during a move is to package them correctly. Glassware should be stuffed with packing paper if possible, and then wrapped with paper again. Place them in a box that is securely taped and clearly marked fragile A color coded system of marking boxes is a valuable tool when using movers because it lets them know at a glance what category of items a box contains. For instance, put red stickers on all boxes that contain dishes and glassware. By putting in the time to package correctly you can rest a bit easier during the move.

As for the boxes you use to package your belongings, it is worth the investment to rent plastic crates from your moving company. A standard cardboard box can be crushed should something be stacked on top of it, or if something falls onto it during the move. A plastic crate can withstand the impact and keep the contents safe. While these crates aren't needed for everything, it would be worthwhile for your breakable items.

For larger items, where packing paper isn't applicable, you may consider using moving blankets. These protective covers can be rented from moving companies or are sometimes supplied as part of the agreement. Moving blankets are usually draped over large items that may scratch during a move, such as tables, or things that could stand to have more cushion in case of light impact.

If there is one word to sum up how to keep your belongings safe during a move, it is preparation. Put in the time to properly pack away your things and you'll find yourself breathing a bit easier as that truck moves on down the road.
